VEXTA X JUXTAPOZ X CONVERSE WALL

Since relocating to Brooklyn (New York) Vexta has been busy doing what she does best – creating amazing neon colour bursts in her studio and on the street.

Now Vexta’s Juxtapoz x Converse Wall video is  live online. This has to be one of the most impressive Vexta murals I’ve seen and it’s interesting to hear her speak about the inspiration behind this feathered boy (reminiscent of an original Vexta artwork and print titled ‘Uprising’ – sorry guys – this print sold out years ago!).

We still have a few Death/Life prints available. You can read more about this print release HERE and purchase one HERE.

VEX_-DEATH-LIFE

A recent New York Times interview ‘The Writing is on the Wall’ highlights the rise and rise of female street artists like Vexta –
The prominent women of the international street art scene — like Fafi, Miss Van, Olek, Maya Hayuk, Faith47, Swoon, Bambi, Sheryo, Vexta and Elle — have shown that claiming a corner of public space is a subversive, rebellious act. Elle bucks against the inane, repetitive stereotyping she sees in advertising signboards, and instead depicts “strong, powerful, beautiful women.” “I got into graffiti because I saw so many men scrawling on the streets and putting up what they wanted to see,” she said. “I wanted to be protected by large warrior women as I walked down the street.”
It’s a recurrent theme. Indie, a mother of three, says she wants to paint women with “strength and courage,” like her mother, who brought her up on her own. Vexta, too, says she wants to create images that show the women she knows — “powerful, strong and free individuals,” not the lame, inert creatures on billboards. Curators and exhibition organizers can be tokenistic, she says, but “in street art we can just take the streets. And that is what we do.”
The article is an insightful look into female street artists and deserves to be read in full HERE

DEATH / LIFE + VEXTA

Late in 2013, VEXTA headed to Mexico City as part of her ongoing, global Neon Tour adventure. Her original travels there in 2012 had left her with an insatiable desire to return to paint a multi-story piece in the centre of the creative neighbourhood of Mexico city, Condesa / Roma. We would like to share with you how this homage to the mesmerizing shapes and intense energy of the city and its’ people unfolded.

To commemorate her travels Vexta has created a limited edition print titled “Death / Life”. Available to purchase exclusively through S&N, “Death / Life” is the culmination of Vexta pushing different directions when it comes to print making. It celebrates and explores the expressive anomalies you can find in hand prints. Made using stencils, spray paint, brushes and templates, each one is radically different and uses Mexican fine art paper as its canvas.

THE DESIGN FILES

We’re very lucky to have our little apartment featured on The Design Files today. In fact, I’m still getting over the shock! A big thanks to Lucy and TDF team for the inclusion. And a special thanks to super stylist Alana Langan of Hunt & Bow and photographer Annette O’Brien – I swear our home has never looked as good as it does in these pics, and probably never will ever again!

If you head over and check out the post you’ll see works from many Signed & Numbered artists including prints (and a few originals) by Ghostpatrol, Miso, Kaff-Eine, Vexta, Letitia Green, Slicer, Mel Kadel, Delicate Mayhem, Maurice Golotta, Auf Wiedersehen and Acorn.

Remember this mural from the first Signed & Numbered at Shop 4, 155 Greville Street?

I was devastated that we had to leave it behind and it was subsequently painted over (I know!!! – a total crime!) Luckily, we had a high res image of it and with Vexta’s okay we made a reproduction and have it hanging in our hallway – thanks Vex!

HOME3

This painted door was a gift to our daughter on her 2nd birthday. And yes, we fully plan on taking this with us when we move out (someday in the far, far future). There’s nothing like having a bit of art on your walls or doors, and this colourful piece by Melbourne artist Kaff-Eine really brightens up Ellis’s room. Kaff-Eine has recently returned from a European adventure but she’s taking private commissions for post-December dates so feel free to shoot me an email at art@signedandnumbered.com.au if you have any ideas in mind…

I love my Slicer original that I managed to snap up at his solo show earlier this year at Backwoods. There are a number of original Slicer works available on his site plus 4 limited edition hand finished prints HERE.

AUF

Above: The ‘Tiny Landscapes’ by Auf Wiedersehen were a lovely gift from the artist but you can purchase them HERE

One of my absolutely favourite pieces of art wasn’t pictured in the post so I thought I’d include this snap here of 23rd Key’s Toys Will Be Toys which is a stencil on Ellis’s bedroom wall. She hasn’t seen Toy Story yet so she’s named him ‘Robot’ and gives him a goodnight kiss every night before bed. I’d love to say she’s the only kid with a bigger than life-size Buzz in her room but as I’ve been fielding quite a few requests for 23rd Key commissions lately I have a feeling that they’ll be a few more Buzz Lightyear’s popping up in other little bedrooms around Melbourne soon! And of course, you can always pick up the limited edition stencil print HERE

RJL2

Rebecca Judd (nee Twigley) is one of Australia’s busiest and best known personalities, working as a television presenter and brand ambassador for some of the country’s biggest companies. She is also a Speech Pathologist, wife and new mum to baby Oscar. To top it all off she’s a local in our hood and a lovely person to boot!

To be in the running head on over to Bec’s blog and leave a comment on today’s post telling us who your favourite Signed & Numbered artist is and why.

Some great comments have flooded in already and it’s really interesting to hear who your faves are.

Signed and Numbered has a number of incredible artists although my favourite would have to be Vexta!. Her art is fab and delivers the WOW factor instantly. I love colourful art like Vexta’s as I have quite a natural palette in my design style and I like to be a little crazier on the colour side with paintings, cushions etc. Her paintings introduce an electricity, beam happiness and evoke imagination. I would adore a piece of her artwork in my living room!
– Madeline Nixon
Loving Philippa Riddiford’s work!! The colour combinations she uses are amazing and very on trend. These prints would not only brighten up any room but would create a focal point for visitors wherever it was placed!
– Zoe Merideth
Hey Bec, I absolutely love Carley Cornelissen’s vibrant and fresh style! Her work could simply be used as a fun and cute animal piece for a child’s bedroom or to brighten up any plain space but I would display it in my lounge room to try to bring an element of nature and playfulness to my home. Xx

WINTER SUN MURAL – VEXTA + SHIDA

Just when we thought we’d lost Vexta to Brooklyn forever she’s back on our shores (albeit temporarily). Last week Vexta took full advantage of a mid-winter sunny day to paint this large scale mural with fellow Melbourne street artist Shida.

VEXTA IN INDIA

Last week a lovely couple popped in to Signed & Numbered and told us how lucky they were to be in India the same time as Sydney artist Vexta. Getting to view Vexta work her neon magic live in such a surreal setting was one of the highlights of their trip. Not all of us are that blessed when it comes to lucky coincidences so I thought I’d share this video with you so that (for a couple of minutes at least) you can pretend you were there too!

VEXTA NEWS

Living in Brooklyn since May, Vexta recently felt the call of the sea and decided to leave her mark throughout Mexico.

Before she left for warmer weather she managed to send us 6 new limited edition prints. Each print is hand finished with neon and metallic stencil layers.

NEW VEXTA WORKS

We’re literally counting down the days until our new series of Vexta prints arrive. Coming all the way from Brooklyn, USA, they’ll rack up some serious frequent flyer miles on the way over. Estimated arrival date – start of next week. How’s that for something to look forward to?

All of Vexta’s prints are hand embellished with multiple stencil layers applied to each print, making each print in the edition a ‘unique multiple’. The snap below gives you a little peek into the behind the scene print process.

To top it off, Vexta is interviewed online on Yen Mag this week. Read the interview HERE

ART EVERYWHERE I LOOK

Earlier this week Kaff-Eine came south-side to do a mini-mural in our new space.

A big thank-you to Vexta, BOO, Kaff-Eine and Letitia Buchan who all donated their time and talent in the run up to the launch of our new space. In doing so they have made the new S&N an incredibly creative and inspiring environment to work in.
