MARKIT @ FEDSQUARE

When we kick open the doors to our new S&N this Wednesday we will have lots of new goodies in addition to our limited edition prints. I’ve already blogged about our artist wallets by POKETO! and now I can also tell you that we’ve secured Victoria Mason’s beautiful Winter Brights collection. Neon is literally rocking my world at the moment (thanks Vexta!) so when I first saw Victoria’s polkadot and oval neon studs at The Finders Keepers Market I jumped on them!

Can’t wait to Wednesday to add a bit of neon to your life? Head down to Markit @ Fed Square this Sunday and meet Victoria in person.

Markit@FedSquare is a biannual curated design market focusing on illustrative and decorative based
design products including fashion, jewellery, homewares, stationery & illustration. Markit@FedSquare invites you
to meet the designers, talk with them about their products and buy something beautiful.

IN-BETWEEN WORLDS

Live in Brisbane or heading north soon? Don’t miss Vexta’s third solo exhibition at Edwina Corlette Gallery, New Farm.

A collection of new work examining our relationship to ourselves, evolution, the mysterious interconnectedness of all living things and the atomic particles that hold it all together…clustered… but possibly ready to shatter into a million pieces, transcend and reform into the the new… in the next world, at any moment.

Vexta has been making artworks since the mid 2000’s and is best known for her street paintings and wheat-pastes, which draw from cultural visual debris, a self-taught aesthetic and an ongoing exploration of mixed media and printmaking techniques explored through painting.

Her psychedelic, neon-drenched images are influenced by a personal symbolism and a greater urban mythology which connect the dots between the personal and the universal, our waking lives and the dreams beneath them and between an acute cultural commentary and beauty.
Vexta’s work has been shown in exhibitions across Australia and is held in numerous public & private collections, including the National Gallery of Australia, Artbank and the University of Queensland Art Museum. She frequently travels and her works can be seen on walls in Sydney, Melbourne, Paris, Berlin, London, San Francisco and Bogota.

IN-BETWEEN WORLDS is an exhibition of paintings, sculpture and installation works.

Can’t make it to Queensland? Drop by Signed & Numbered and get your Vexta fix by viewing her mural (see pic below) or browsing her limited edition prints.

Vexta + Project 5: Volume 4 Live Auction

Vexta isn’t averse to doing her bit for charity.

A couple of months ago it was a Absolut Vodka bottle in benefit of Borneo Orangutan Survival Society (read the blog post here).

This time around the Vexta work pictured below was auctioned off last Thursday as part of Project 5: Volume 4 Live Show, a collaborative event involving aMBUSH and the Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority.

The whole concept of Project 5 is to bring the artists together to showcase their wonderful works in a live environment in order to give the audience a personable experience with the design process.

Works by Vexta, E.L.K, Reka and HAHA were auctioned off for a total of $12,800 with all proceeds going to the charitable arts and media organisation Information and Cultural Exchange.

Who’s Super Cool?

People keep on telling me that there’s a Vexta mural at South Melbourne Market. In my quest to locate it yesterday (I didn’t find it by the way… directions anyone?) I stumbled upon another absolute find – The Super Cool.

What’s The Super Cool?

“A mobile emporium that goes to the people with an eclectic mix of everyday objects from around the globe. We sell stationary, design books, homewares, posters & art, cool kids toys and vintage industrial objects.”

I wish I’d stumbled upon these guys earlier (they had a pop-up store in Melbourne Central early December) as they sell a great selection of unique and quirky items, all reasonably priced.

At Signed & Numbered we really pride ourself on the look and feel of the store. Every square meter is utilised to the max and this is what caught my eye about The Super Cool. Their pop-up store is brilliantly designed, totally mobile yet totally stylish.

The pop-up store will be at the South Melbourne Market on market days (Wed, Fri, Sat & Sun) until the 4th of March 2012. You can find them at SO:ME Space (enter via corner of York & Cecil Street) or check them out online at www.thesupercool.com.

Happy shopping x

OUTPOST / Cockatoo Island

I was amazed to see this image of a Vexta stencil on the side of a massive shipping container. This recent work is part of Outpost Project, a free street art event on Cockatoo Island. If you’re Sydney based or planning a visit before the 11th December be sure to check it out.

More info:

Welcome to OUTPOST PROJECT.

Cockatoo Island’s vast abandoned factories and intriguing forgotten alleyways are the perfect backdrop for projects showcasing the energy and diversity of Street Art. With OUTPOST PROJECT, visitors will be able to see a huge range of Street Art in one location. And because of its dynamic and live nature, the art will change and evolve, giving visitors something different to see throughout the course of the festival.

We’re proud to present an event of this scale, the first of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, demonstrating Australia’s leading role in the Street Art movement. Our ongoing partnership with the Biennale, the Redbull X-Fighters in September and more recently the establishment of the Cockatoo Island Film Festival in 2012 is proof the World Heritage listed Cockatoo Island is the perfect backdrop for Sydney’s most cultural events.

Cockatoo Island continues to deliver Sydney-siders and tourists a diverse range of unique things to do from the recently relaunched Island Bar made from shipping containers, to our canteen kiosk, and the world’s first waterfront campground. Check out our unique spaces if you want to lease a space for your business or hire a venue space for a corporate or private function. Visit the information centre or talk to one of our volunteer guides to find out more.

4 new works by Vexta, 3 of which are hand finished with one or more stencil layers, are available exclusively at Signed & Numbered. Click HERE to view.
